CupcakeCamp Boston 2011

Cupcake Camp

Erica went to the CupcakeCamp Boston event on Wednesday April 13th!

I heard about the event online back in February and immediately added it to my calendar. Cupcakes?!?! Heck yea!! I’ll be there. I ended up getting there early to help set up and helped direct bakers where to put their cupcakes and mainly took pictures, lots of pictures!

I also helped out at the ticket table later on in the evening. It started at 7pm.

Almost 800 cupcake-eaters came to the Center of the Arts at the Armory in Somerville for the second annual CupcakeCamp Boston.

Twenty bakeries and fifty amateur bakers from around the area came out to share their cupcakes!!!

CupcakeCamp Boston is a free and open gathering of cupcake enthusiasts.

The event was also a fundraiser for Lovin’ Spoonfuls, a local non-profit organization that recovers otherwise wasted food and delivers it to local soup kitchens and crisis centers. Over $2300 was raised.

I got there around 5:45, but I had the opportunity to talk to one of the youngest bakers I’ve ever met before the event began. It was Anthony Tata, he was 11- although the next day was his 12th birthday. He was super excited to be there!

Oh and it had rained all day long and into the evening:

I worked at the ticket table for about 45 minutes. We were asking for suggested donations of $5. We also had to make announcements that they could eat as many cupcakes as they wanted, but they couldn’t take any outside. There was a line down the street and so it wasn’t fair for people to leave with cupcakes when people were still waiting in line. We had a few people that didn’t listen to us or just pretended not to hear us because we had a “security crew” to stop people from leaving with plates and boxes of cupcakes!

The amateur bakers, although lots looked professional:

Elizabeth, the organizer is in the middle. Erin on the left was fabulous at the ticket table, and I think that is Elizabeth’s mom on the right:

OMG! This is a yearly a thing, right? I am so going next year. I need a cupcake now. I would have eaten way too many cupcakes if I was there.
